Medical Information
Supporting pupils with medical conditions
Staff and Governors are committed to the full inclusion of all pupils and strive to ensure that those with medical needs receive appropriate care and support while at school. We are dedicated to ensuring that pupils with medical conditions are able to participate fully in all aspects of school life.
Administration of Medication in School
Staff are only permitted to administer prescription medication where:
-
Written consent has been received from a parent/carer
-
The medicine has been prescribed by a doctor
-
The prescribed dosage requires more than three doses per day
Where possible, parents/carers are asked to request that doctors prescribe medication to be taken in three doses per day, so that administration during school hours can be avoided.
If your child requires medication in school, please complete the appropriate form and submit it, along with the medication, to the school office. A paper copy of the form is available from the school office.
Allergies and Over-the-Counter Medication
To support children with allergies (diagnosed, suspected, or under investigation), school will accept over-the-counter antihistamines in line with National Health Service guidance.
All medication must:
-
Be provided in the original packaging
-
Be in date
-
Be in accordance with the child’s individual healthcare plan
Medication will only be administered with written consent from a parent/carer.
Ongoing Medical Conditions
We recognise that some conditions require regular medication to be stored and administered in school, including asthma, allergies, and diabetes.
All staff are first aid trained and are able to support children with a range of medical conditions. Where necessary, additional training will be undertaken to ensure staff can meet specific medical needs.
Parental Responsibilities
At the beginning of each school year, or when a child joins the school, parents/carers are asked to declare any medical conditions on the admission form.
It is the responsibility of parents/carers to:
-
Inform the school in writing of any changes to medication, dosage, or medical needs
-
Ensure this information is shared with the school office
-
Check medication expiry dates regularly
Parents/carers must also notify the school office of any medical appointments that cannot be arranged outside school hours by emailing the School Office.
