Safeguarding
Safeguarding Statement
Boroughbridge Primary School and Nursery is committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of all children in school.
All North Yorkshire schools, including Boroughbridge Primary School and Nursery follow the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership procedures. The school will, normally, endeavour to discuss all concerns with parents about their child/ren. However, there may be exceptional circumstances when the school will discuss concerns with Social Care and/or the Police without parental knowledge (in accordance with Child Protection procedures). The school will, of course, always aim to maintain a positive relationship with all parents.
School Policies
The school’s Safeguarding and Child Protection policy is available on our website. A paper copy is also available from the school office on request.
Concerned about a child?
If you have concerns about a pupil’s welfare, please speak to our Designated Safeguarding Leader (DSL) or one of our Deputy DSLs. If it is out of hours, you can use the following contacts:
- Where there are significant immediate concerns about the safety of a child, you should contact the police on 999.
- If you believe the situation is urgent but does not require the police, please call MAST (Multi Agency Support Team) at North Yorkshire on 0300 131 2 131.
- Should your call be outside of business hours (Monday – Friday / 9am-5pm) please call 0300 131 2 131 to speak to the Emergency Duty Team.
Prevent Strategy
The school supports the DFE’s Prevent Strategy. All staff are trained to identify and respond to concerns related to extremism or radicalisation.
Operation Encompass
The school is part of the Operation Encompass project that runs jointly between schools and North North Yorkshire Police. This is the reporting of police attended domestic abuse incidents to schools, prior to the start of the next school day, where there are children in the home.
Operation Encompass will ensure that a member of the school staff, who is also a safeguarding leader, known as a Key Adult, is trained to allow them to liaise with the police and to use the information that has been shared in confidence, while ensuring that the school is able to make provision for possible difficulties experienced by children, or their families, who have experienced a domestic abuse incident. The Key adult for the school is Mrs Ryan.
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP)
CEOP is dedicated to keeping children safe from sexual abuse and grooming online. You can report to us if you are concerned that your child is being sexually abused or groomed online.
If you feel your child is in immediate danger, please call the police on 999.
The Curriculum
Children are taught how to stay safe through:
- Online safety
- Bikeability
- Food safety
- Water safety
- Road safety
- Relationships and sex education
- Stranger danger
NSPCC Talk PANTS
As a school we deliver the NSPCC Talk PANTS campaign annually to children in Years 1 – Year 6 as well as in Reception when needed. It can be beneficial for these messages to be reinforced at home. The NSPCC has developed some guides for all parents of primary school aged children to speak to their child about keeping safe – called the Underwear rule.
You can find guides to the NSPCC PANTS Rule to help you have simple conversations about keeping safe from abuse at . You can speak to an advisor for further advice or request a hard-copy guide for parents and carers by phoning the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000. You can also visit www.nspcc.org.uk/parents for other advice on keeping your child safe.
